How they started
In 2009, Fountain Hills residents Susan Dawson and Christine Schaeken began volunteering with rescue dogs while training for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk. Partnering with Pal’s Inn Pet Resort, the two friends started walking rescue dogs to help socialize them and improve their quality of life. What began as a simple volunteer effort eventually grew into Rescue Pals, a nonprofit dog rescue that has now served the community for more than 18 years.
Over the years, Rescue Pals has rescued hundreds of dogs, becoming an important part of the Fountain Hills community and a trusted advocate for animals in need, often partnering with other rescues that need temporary housing for pets.
Rescue Spotlight
Nominated by Jenifer Lee. The first fundraiser had to go to Rescue Pals. I met them when I lived across the street from the pet resort the dogs were housed at. (I didn't realize that at the time.) I often saw the same group of women walking fast pitbulls in the morning and had to get to the bottom of it.
"Come by and walk with us!" And that's what I did.
Rescue Pals was my first experience volunteering inside of a rescue, and around pitbulls, which crushed any stereotype I ever learned about the breed. I quickly became part of a group of women who woke up VERY early, every morning, and walked small dogs, slow dogs and fast pitbulls. It was a great volunteer experience that preceded two others that weren't so great. So looking back, I know these ladies lead with compassion, and it is always the well-being of the dogs first. I was among a great group of volunteers in a pet-loving community.

Support Rescue Pals!
To continue its mission, the nonprofit relies heavily on donations, and two annual yard sales where the community comes together and donates great items. 100% of all proceeds go back to the rescue. Financial contributions help provide food, shelter, and veterinary care for the dogs, while volunteers assist with dog walking, events, and board service. When Rescue Pals receives donated items they cannot use, the organization shares them with other local nonprofits that support pets and their owners.
After 18 years of service, Rescue Pals remains committed to improving the lives of rescue dogs and strengthening the connection between animals and the community that supports them.
